Intelligent Reasoning

Promoting, advancing and defending Intelligent Design via data, logic and Intelligent Reasoning and exposing the alleged theory of evolution as the nonsense it is. I also educate evotards about ID and the alleged theory of evolution one tard at a time and sometimes in groups

What is a "targeted search"?

-
I have been saying that a targeted search is a possible mechanism for Intelligent Design.

But what is a targeted search?

For one, Richard Dawkins' "weasel" program ("The Blind Watchmaker"), is a targeted search.

1- Start with a goal/ target in mind (dawkins' weasel goal was a senetence "Methinks it is like a weasel")

2- Set the initial conditions (Dawkins started with a string of letters)

3- Write an algorithm and provide the resources to reach the goal/ target (Dawkins provided the alphabet and wrote an algorithm that would mutate the initial string and then check for "closeness" to the target)

That is a targeted search in a nutshell.

Targeted searches have been used to design antennae and to also reproduce patented electronic circuits.

A targeted search is a very powerful tool/ mechanism.

Yes Rich evolutionary algorithms are examples of a targeted search.

Nah, in the end it all boils down to whatever survives to reproduce, survives to reproduce.

    In your scenario, yes.

    In a design scenario, no.

What do you think the target it, something very specific or something that meets certain conditions? Can there be multiple targets?

Something that specifically meets certain conditions.

    LoL!

OK wait- now just follow along-

According to "The Priviledged Planet" the universe was designed for scientific discovery.

That would mean it specifically needs scientific discoverers and discoverees- you know things to be discovered and things to do the discovering.

Then there are all the things needed just to support those two groups- the resources.

But our we- humans on this planet- a specific target?

    That is a possibility.

We have to keep in mind that artificial selection is a targeted search.

And we may be some "experiment"....

    Can there be multiple targets?

Multiple targets, multiple initial conditions, multiple resource availabilities, multiple algorithms.

And multiple designers and multiple verses

I was actually think more in terms of real search as you might find in AI. Take the GA solution for Steiner trees -

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steiner_tree_problem

This problem is I believe NP complete for a sufficiently large number of nodes.

How would you describe the target of this search?

The privileged planet argument isn't that great. Anything with an X is designed for X. And if the universe is designed, then vacuum and hydrogen are the creator's beloved.

It is better than anything your position has to offer.

Anything with an X is designed for X.

    That isn't what it says.

And if the universe is designed, then vacuum and hydrogen are the creator's beloved.

    That doesn't follow.

    I presented a real search.

How would you describe the target of this search?

It is looking/ searching for a solution.

Mount Everest was specifically designed to kill off the weak-minded humans. This is fun. What other incredibly stupid connections can we make?

I see something. I do something with it. So I determine it was specifically designed for whatever I just did with it.

    Awesome.

Perhaps you should watch the improv game "Props". I'm sure you wouldn't understand it, though.

I am sure you can make many stupid connections.

Again just because you can act like an asshole that doesn't refute ID.

Well, if the Universe is designed because we're here to study it, several things become clear:

The Great Salt Lake was designed because I need a comfortable recliner to read my paper on.

Nerf was designed because my nephew needed an interesting feeling tissue for his nose.

Paint was deigned so bears can't see the food hanging in my kitchen through the window.

    This is awesome.

Unless of course, you would like to sum up why something being here (the Universe) so we can study it (ID) is not like something being here (paint) so we an hide from bears (a reasonable application).

    Hmmmm.

Joe's position is that we know the universe is designed because we can study it.

Yet he sometimes seems to disagree with this. Maybe he should see if he still has a left hand.

The point of the book was to present the scientific data which demonstrates the universe was designed for scientific discovery.

    From the cover:

    The Privileged Planet

How Our Place In The Cosmos Was Designed For Discovery

    Let's get this straight.

    1. You think the universe was designed for scientific study as evidenced by the fact that we are able to study it.

    2. You do not believe the universe was designed because we are able to study it.

    Quite a conundrum.

  • At 7:40 AM, Blogger Joe G said…

Nope, once agin you have to twist things:

Again just because you can act like an asshole that doesn't refute anything.

But anyway why don't YOU provide something that supports your statements?

That is how it is supposed to go.

You, however, just fling shit around hoping something sticks.

IOW you "argue" like a drooling imbecile.

    I have too.

Why don't you reconcile your belief that the universe is here for us to study and also that studying the universe provides no clue to its design.

I don't have such a thing to reconcile.

IOW you don't know what you are talking about.

So why don't you reconcile your belief that you think you are actually making sense with the fact that you are a twisted asshole.

    All evidence to the contrary.
